What Does the Result Mean?

The result is an estimate of gross earnings for one biweekly payroll period. Gross pay is earnings before federal, state, and local taxes or other deductions.

It is not the same as the net pay deposited after all withholding and deductions.

For salaried employees, the calculator divides annual compensation by 26. For hourly employees, it multiplies the hourly rate by the hours worked across two weeks, then adds any overtime or bonuses entered.

The result does not automatically calculate federal withholding, Social Security, Medicare, Additional Medicare Tax, or state deductions. Those amounts depend on current rules and individual circumstances.

The methodology below explains the assumptions behind the estimate.

How Is Biweekly Pay Calculated?

Biweekly earnings are calculated from annual salary or hourly wages using the formulas below.

Salary formula:

Annual salary ÷ 26 = gross biweekly paycheck

Hourly formula:

Hourly rate × regular weekly hours × 2 = regular biweekly earnings

Overtime formula:

Hourly rate × overtime multiplier × weekly overtime hours × 2 = overtime earnings

Add bonuses or commissions, then subtract only the deductions entered. Round results to the nearest cent.

Payroll dates may shift around holidays, and some calendar years can include a 27th paycheck depending on the employer’s schedule. If your pay schedule changes during the year, confirm the number of periods with your employer.

Methodology updated August 8, 2026. No date-sensitive tax rates are built into this gross earnings method.

For withholding, use the current Internal Revenue Service (IRS) Tax Withholding Estimator. For overtime questions, consult the [U.S.

Department of Labor](https://www.dol.gov/agencies/whd/overtime/tools). The worked example shows each step of the calculation.

Worked Biweekly Pay Example

Assume an employee earns $24 per hour, works 40 regular hours and 3 overtime hours each week, and receives overtime at 1.5 times the regular rate.

Regular earnings: $24 × 40 × 2 = $1,920. Overtime earnings: $24 × 1.5 × 3 × 2 = $216.

Gross biweekly pay: $1,920 + $216 = $2,136. This calculation separates regular pay from overtime pay.

If the employee enters $150 in deductions, the estimated amount after those deductions is $1,986. Actual take-home pay may be lower after Federal Insurance Contributions Act (FICA) taxes, income tax withholding, and other payroll items.
